Rocky Mountain National Park wildfire smoke forecast
The map above shows NOAA HRRR-Smoke near-surface PM2.5 for the next 48 hours, updated hourly, with active fires from NIFC and live AQI from EPA AirNow monitors. It opens over Rocky Mountain National Park.
The park spans the Continental Divide, with valley floors around 8,000 to 9,000 feet and Trail Ridge Road running above 12,000. That vertical range is unusually large, and it means the answer to whether the park is smoky depends heavily on which elevation you are asking about. Aloft smoke that Denver only meets in the afternoon is at ground level on the high tundra.
Where the smoke comes from
Colorado's own Front Range and Western Slope fires are the closest sources, and Pacific Northwest and California smoke crossing the state at altitude is the more frequent one. Because the park's high country intersects that transport layer directly, the summits can be smoky on days when the Front Range cities are clean.
How long it lasts
The east-side valleys around Estes Park pool overnight and clear through the morning. The high country follows the upper-level flow instead and clears only when that pattern changes, which is why Trail Ridge can stay hazy through a day that improves everywhere below it.
Past smoke events
The 2020 East Troublesome Fire grew explosively, crossed the Continental Divide inside the park, and forced a full closure, becoming the largest fire in the park's history. The Cameron Peak Fire burned just north in the same season.
Trails and viewpoints
Bear Lake, the Longs Peak trail, and Trail Ridge Road cover nearly 5,000 feet of elevation between them, so the near-surface forecast at the specific trailhead is worth checking rather than a single reading for the park. High routes are the ones most likely to be inside a transport layer.

Near-surface is the product that maps to what you breathe and to AQI, not the high-altitude column that only tints the sunset. A sky that looks bad and a monitor that reads fine are usually both correct, and they are describing different layers of air.
