Wyoming rarely supplies its own smoke in quantity, but it sits directly downwind of Idaho, Montana, and the Great Basin, so August plumes cross the state at altitude and settle into the valleys overnight. Jackson Hole and the Bighorn Basin around Cody hold it longest because both are enclosed basins with cold-air drainage off high terrain. Cheyenne and Casper, out on the open plains, ventilate as soon as the wind picks up.
